National Selection Process

Applications

The five Subspecialty Committees advertise annually (in the January, February and March issues of the Training and Assessment Bulletin and College Connexion, and the March issue of O&G ) for prospective trainees to apply for a training position in the subspecialty training programs that lead to certification as a subspecialist in one of the following:

  • Gynaecological Oncology
  • Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • Obstetrical & Gynaecological Ultrasound
  • Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility
  • Urogynaecology

Prospective trainees are required to forward an application for Subspecialty Training Positions to College House in Melbourne, including:

  • a curriculum vitae
  • a list of research and publications
  • the names and contact numbers of three referees

The three referees must be:

  • A senior colleague (FRANZCOG or equivalent) with whom the applicant has worked in the previous two years. If applicants are still completing FRANZCOG training, this senior colleague must be the Training Supervisor
  • Two other colleagues with whom the applicant has worked in the last two years

The National Selection Process interviews are held in May.

Applicants must have successfully completed the MRANZCOG examinations prior to the closing date for applications. For this reason, prospective trainees should sit the examinations the year before they wish to submit a National Selection Application. Contact the Subspecialties Services Department to confirm the application closing date for the National Selection Process.

Selection Criteria

Applicants are assessed against the following selection criteria:

  • previous experience in obstetrics and gynaecology
  • previous surgical experience
  • research experience
  • psychosocial medical experience
  • teaching experience
  • commitment to the subspecialty
  • ability to relocate during the training program
  • referee reports
Interview Panel

The interview panels comprise the Chair of the relevant Subspecialty Committee, and Program Directors (or their nominees) from those Training Units which have a vacancy for training in the next two years. All applicants are notified in writing of the outcome of the interview.
