Research Project
Overview
All trainees entering the MRANZCOG / FRANZCOG training program
from 1 December 2003 are required to present a Research Project
that meets defined satisfactory completion criteria before gaining
eligibility for elevation to Fellowship.
Trainees may, however, apply for exemption from the Research Component on such grounds as specified by the Education & Assessment Committee.
Further details regarding the Research Project, including the format
for presentation and satisfactory completion criteria, can be found
in the Training Program Handbook.

Research Proposals
Prospective Approval of Research Project
A research proposal in the health sciences must be submitted by
trainees and be prospectively approved by the Assessment Subcommittee
no later than the end of Year 3 of the MRANZCOG / FRANZCOG training
program for those trainees who entered the training program between 1 December 2003 and 30 November 2006, or the end of Year 2 of the MRANZCOG / FRANZCOG training
program for those trainees entering the training program from 1 December 2006.
Given that approval of any given proposal cannot be assumed
to be automatic, trainees are advised to submit their proposals
well before the end of the relevant training year.
To submit a Research Project proposal, download the Research
Project Proposal form complete it and email it as an attachment
to Frances Gilleard.
You should also save a copy for your reference.
A member of the Assessment Subcommittee will assess your proposal
and provide you with the appropriate feedback. The estimated turn
around time for this process is five weeks.
Criteria for Prospective Approval of the RANZCOG Research Project
The following criteria are used by the Assessment Subcommittee
in determining the suitability of research proposals:
Aims
- The aims of the study are described clearly
- The hypothesis to be tested is clearly stated
Literature Review
- The bibliography is comprehensive but appropriately selective
- Key findings in the literature are identified
- The literature is critically reviewed
Methods
- An appropriate study design is outlined
- Appropriate methods are outlined
- Limitations of design and methods are recognised and stated
- Appropriate methods of statistical analysis are outlined
- Details of selection criteria for research participants are
provided
Research Content
- The proposal provides reasonable training in primary research
techniques
Research Studies
Completed Research Studies
Trainees are required to present a research study that meets satisfactory completion criteria, before gaining eligibility to Fellowship, for those who entered the training program between 1 December 2003 and 20 November 2006. Trainees entering the training program from 1 December 2006, are required to present a research study that meets satisfactory completion criteria no later than the end of Year 5 of training.
Further details regarding the research study, including the format for presentation and satisfactory completion criteria, can be found in the Training Program Handbook. ( 1.5 MB Large! ).
Trainees are advised that the recommended length of the report is 2,500 words, but that reports that range between 2,000 – 3,000 words (not including tables, figures or references) will be accepted.
All reports should be submitted in a format suitable for publishing. Trainees should refer to ANZJOG's Instructions for Authors for guidance.
To submit a completed research study, complete the Research Study submission form and email it as an attachment to Frances Gilleard, along with an electronic copy of your report.
A member of the Assessment Subcommittee will assess your research project and you will be notified of your result by email.
Exemption from the Research Project
Trainee Exemption
Trainees may be exempted from undertaking the Research Project if they possess a formal higher research degree qualification in the health sciences or have successfully completed an honours year in biomedical sciences (Regulation 7.4.6.1), or on the grounds of prior publication of research (Regulation 7.4.6.2).
If you are seeking exemption from the Research Project, please download the Application for Exemption form. This should be sent, along with the specified document(s), by email to Frances Gilleard.
A member of the Assessment Subcommittee will assess your application and you will be notified of your result by email.
Research Grants
Introduction
Research grants are available to trainees undertaking the Research
Project within the RANZCOG curriculum. These are awarded by the
Research Foundation on a competitive basis, with grant applications
being assessed by the Assessment Subcommittee. It is expected that,
each year, up to 20 grants will be made, to the value of $500 each
(or perhaps more, at the discretion of the Assessment Subcommittee,
for individual projects that are considered exceptionally meritorious).
Possible Uses
Research grants are designed to provide some support to trainees
as they undertake the Research Project. The uses to which an applicant
may put a grant would include, but not necessarily be limited to,
activities such as the following:
• Statistical support, data analysis
• Advertising for recruitment
• Travel directly related to the ongoing project
• Administrative support (photocopying, data entry, printing,
postage etc)
Applications
Trainees who wish to apply for a Research Grant must do so as part of their application for Prospective Approval using the Research Project Proposal form.
Applications may be submitted at any time of the year; however,
a trainee’s application for a grant will only be assessed
if the trainee’s research proposal is approved. Assessors will not evaluate applications
from trainees from their own institutions.
Applications are assessed at the end of each financial year. Some time after June 30 of each year, the recipients of grants
will be announced. Recipients are notified by email.
Assessment Criteria
The Assessment Subcommittee assessment criteria for grant applications
include:
- Originality
- Clinical relevance to O&G
- Methodology (rigorous and sound)
- Potential for publication
- Measure of effort
- Value for money
Publication of List of Recipients
The Research Foundation publishes the names of all awardees of
various monies in its annual list, "Recipients of Scholarships/Fellowships/Grants",
which is released in September. The names of those awarded a Trainee
Research Grant will be included on this list, so that it forms a
comprehensive record of projects and recipients supported by the
Foundation. This list is published in O&G, posted on
our website and circulated to Councillors.
