Distance Education Program (DEP)

Overview

The Distance Education Program (DEP) continues to be an essential element of the MRANZCOG/FRANZCOG Training Program. However, trainees entering the Training Program on or after 1 December 2003 undertake the Flexible Learning Program (FLP) not the DEP.

The DEP requires the completion of a total of TEN units. Full details of the Distance Education Program can be found in the Training Program Handbook under the section for Transition Trainees.

Trainees who were in Years 4, 5 or 6 at the time of the transition to the new curriculum are required to complete the DEP.

Trainees who were in Year 3 at the time of the transition to the new curriculum were given the option of continuing with the DEP or switching to the new Flexible Learning Program (FLP). The only Year 3 Trainees for whom the DEP may now continue to be a requirement of training are those who have completed the seven pre-Membership DEP units, and who passed the MRANZCOG Written Examination in August 2004, and the MRANZCOG Oral Examination held in May 2005. Please refer to the flowchart Training & Assessment Options Available to Year 3 Trainees in the the Training Program Handbook.

New Edition of Behavioural Medicine Module

For those trainees who need to complete the DEP as a requirement for elevation to Fellowship: If you have not yet complete Module 1, Behavioural Medicine, please note that the 2005 edition of this module is now available and that it supersedes previous editions. There is only one significant change in this edition: Following a meeting of the assessors of this task, the instructions on completing the summative assessment tasks, as set out on page 42, have been modified in order to clarify assessors' expectations of trainee submissions. In summary, four complete consultations must be recorded, and trainees are not required to limit each consultation to 5 min. In addition, the Assessment Rating Scales are to be used as guides for conducting the consultations, and submitted along with the recordings, but the assessors will assess candidates on their global performance. All submissions of this module’s summative assessments must comply with these instructions. For details, please see page 42 of the module. The 2005 edition is now available online (see below) and will download very much faster than the previous edition.

If you have any questions regarding this module, please contact Jayne Petricca at College House on +61 3 9412 2972.
