self-assessment

Self-assessment

What is self-assessment?

This is an approach that enables you to look closely at your practice and the systems you and the organisation have in place. It will aid you in identifying strengths and areas for development. There are several ways to assess how you are doing in risk management. Through:

  • External evaluation by someone like a risk manager;
  • Peer assessment; or
  • Self assessment

The SSRS has developed self-assessment as an approach because there is recognition that specialists are at different levels of managing their risk. Some specialists may be working alone and their risk management activities vary compared to their colleagues. Part of this project is to foster continuous improvement at a clinical level. These self-assessment tools require you to reflect on what is currently taking place in your practice by identifying your own risk management strengths and areas for improvement. You may not have thought of some of the issues raised by the self-assessment tools. Another way is to use the tools to work with colleagues to discuss and assess topic which are of concern to the whole team.

What do I need to do?
  1. Select as many categories as interest you and complete your self-assessment. To collect PR&CRM points you will need to select at least 10 categories from the list of 19.
  2. Use the self-assessment sheets to get some ideas about your own risk management and bring them to the implementation and action planning videoconference workshop.
  3. Develop the areas where you have not yet developed risk management into an action plan. For the areas where you feel you are performing well put them into a risk management status form to demonstrate your achievements and share with your colleagues.
  4. Develop your own action plan using the 'Action Planning Worksheets'. For each self-assessment tool there is a plan of suggested issues that you could work on to develop and improve. These can be located under Action planning.
  5. If you are having trouble in developing an action plan, you can get help and advice from the SSRS Project Manager.
  6. If you would like to collect PR&CRM or MOPS points for this work you will need to put these on your annual points claim form or MOPS diary. You will also need to keep evidence on your self-assessment in case you are audited.
