Specialist obstetrician Locum Scheme

Applicants for Specialist Locum Relief

Overview

Applicants requiring locum support through SOLS may be individual specialist obstetricians, or obstetric practices or hospitals in the public/and or private sector making application on behalf on an individual doctor. All applicants must be located in rural or regional areas of Australia (RRMA 3-7).

The Scheme includes the following features:

  • a non-refundable administration fee of $660 (GST inclusive) per applicant;
  • a daily locum fee subsidised to 50% of the current market rate of $2000 per day for 14 days (that is, @ $1000 per day) and an optional additional 2 weeks of unsubsidised support; and
  • payment of locum travel costs to and from the placement; and
  • locum travel time to and from the placement.

The SOLS Secretarial will:

  • handle requests for RANZCOG locums and arrange placements;
  • verify RANZCOG locum qualifications and registration;
  • organise locum provider numbers and registration if required;
  • advise all locums and applicants in writing that locums are responsible for arranging and paying for their own medical indemnity cover;
  • organise travel.

The applicant is responsible for:

  • a non-refundable administration fee of $660 (GST inclusive);
  • undertaking referee checking;
  • the decision to employ the locum;
  • arranging the credentialing process on site;
  • providing a preliminary handover for the locum on clinical, professional, personal, and other issues prior to commencement of the placement and at the conclusion of the placement and;
  • completing an evaluation form following the placement.

Indemnity Cover

Locums are responsible for arranging and paying their own medical indemnity cover. They must provide evidence that it is sufficient for the length of placement and the type of work to be undertaken. The locum must provide appropriate level of run-off cover following placements. If the locum is providing SOLS locum relief at a public health service, their medical indemnity will be covered by the state based funding system .
