Intrapartum Fetal Surveillance Clinical Guidelines - Second Edition

The second edition of the RANZCOG intrapartum fetal surveillance guidelines were approved by March Council and are now available.isf

The College wishes to thank the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority for their generous support in funding the development of the original guidelines and the review and revision process.

When the guidelines were first published the College decided to have a relatively short review period. This strategy was adopted to enable obstetricians, general practitioners and midwives to implement the guidelines into clinical practice and provide feedback to the College on the applicability and utility of the guidelines. In 2004 a Working Party chaired by Professor Euan Wallace was established to review the feedback from clinicians and to incorporate any recent evidence from the literature published between 2002-2005. Draft guidelines were developed and in February 2006 an Interpretation and Implementation workshop was held at the College. Participants represented key stakeholder groups in Australia and New Zealand and included general practitioners, midwives and consumers along with the Fellows from the Working Party.

The revised guidelines provide advice on all aspects of intrapartum fetal surveillance including:

  • How to undertake intrapartum fetal surveillance
  • Fetal surveillance in low risk pregnancies
  • Fetal surveillance in pregnancies with risk factors
  • The admission CTG
  • CTG definitions
  • Fetal blood sampling
  • Maintaining standards and clinical practice review

The Clinical Practice Algorithm has been fully updated to reflect the modifications to the guidelines.

It is hoped that Fellows and Members will find these guidelines useful and informative. As always, feedback is most welcome.
