Introduction

The New Zealand Committee of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) has prepared this document to provide guidance to our members and election candidates as the country approaches the general election. We write to inform political parties of our suggestions for improvements in areas which are of particular concern and relevance to the women and babies in our profession’s care.

Preventing Severe Maternal Morbidity

In New Zealand, maternal death in pregnancy is fortunately a rare event. However, severe morbidity or harm is more common and looking at these cases and analysing them will help clinicians to recognise the early warning signs and increase their ability to prevent the progression from good to ill health in these cases. Severe Acute Maternal Morbidity (SAMM) refers to cases in which a very ill pregnant or recently delivered woman would have died were good luck and good care not on her side.
