Overview
This workshop on Medical Responses to Adults Who Have Experienced
Sexual Assault - provides information and skills development for
medical professionals in responding to adults who have experienced
sexual assault.
The health impacts of sexual assault are now understood to be potentially
life-long, chronic or fatal - but importantly, preventable.
It is also increasingly clear that victim/survivors are less likely
to disclose if they are asked directly by medical professionals
can ensure the continuing improvement of the well-being of adults
who have experienced sexual assault.
These learning sessions presented by RANZCOG will improve your
knowledge and understanding of the health impacts of sexual assault
and provide you with the opportunity to exercise and upgrade your
skills in responding.

educational module for doctors Medical Responses to Adults Who
Have Experienced Sexual Assault which was produced by and is

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
- List the potential health impacts of sexual assault
- Identify cues to alert you to the possibility that sexual assault may be a factor for your patient
- Ask direct and sensitive, open questions that will enable your patient to tell you about their experience
- Identify appropriate medical responses, resources and referral pathways.
Format of the learning sessions
The sessions will use a mix of delivery techniques such as short
lectures, reflective exercises, small group facilitated discussion
and large group brain-storming exercises.
Local sexual assault service providers will present a short session
identifying local referral agencies and specialist resources.
The sessions will be held on two consecutive evenings in each
location.
Presenters
Margot Scott and Liz Olle will be facilitating the learning sessions.
Margot and Liz have a combined expertise of three decades of working
with training, research and advocacy in responding to violence against
women. Both are currently work at the Domestic Violence and Incest
Resource Centre (DVIRC) in Melbourne and are contracted to RANZCOG
for this training.

The Darwin workshop will be held on Monday 27 June and
Tuesday 28 June 2005 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm (light supper
