Information and instructions for participating in the LEAP Framework pilot

Thank you for agreeing to participate in the LEAP Framework pilot. The pilot offers a collaborative opportunity to develop standards of professionalism across specialties and to work towards a consistent approach to CPD for all medical specialists, regardless of the discipline or practice setting.

The aim of this national pilot is to test the usefulness and validity of the framework in practice over a twelve month period. Specialists from the following eight medical colleges have volunteered to be involved in this collaborative project:

  • Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA)
  • The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP)
  • The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG)
  • The Australasian College of Dermatologists (ACD)
  • The Royal Australian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA)
  • The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO)
  • Faculty of Radiation Oncologists: The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR)
  • The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP)

Your Responsibilities

Steps involved

The list below outlines the steps involved in participating in this pilot.

You will be expected to:

  1. Log on to the LEAP Framework site through your own College web page, using an Id and password.
  2. Fill in the on-line survey and press the submit button.
  3. Complete an on-line learning plan within the predetermined framework. This provides you with a record of the types of activities and the areas that you would like to do professional development in. It also gives you a guide to the number of points / credits that have been allotted to activities. As the year progresses, you can also take advantage of any unplanned learning opportunities that arise and add them to your plan.
(see flier for more detailed information about planned and unplanned learning)
  4. Undertake CPD activities that meet the following minimum guidelines:

    a) Obtain 50 points/credits on CPD activities for the 12 month pilot period

    b) Complete CPD activities in each of the three strands. (any components)

    c) Complete 10 points/credits in any level 3 activity (any strand, any component)
  5. Record details of any CPD activities that you undertake, on-line, as soon as you complete them. In some instances this may involve reflection of the activity and your practice.
  6. Keep any handouts and documents associated with CPD activities that you have undertaken, in a safe place. You may be audited at the completion of the pilot.
  7. Complete an on-line survey at the end to help us evaluate the applicability of the framework to your practice and speciality.
  8. Be prepared to be interviewed about the framework’s usefulness and relevance to you as a medical professional, if selected.

Our Responsibilities

LEAP Office responsibilities

The LEAP Project Office will:

  1. Provide a secure website for you to participate in the program on-line.
  2. Provide an on-line pre-learning plan survey to help you to reflect on your practice and identify your personal learning needs for the next 12 months.
  3. Convey to the various Colleges, the learning needs of Fellows identified from the learning plans.
  4. Place the activities your College currently provides / recommends within the appropriate strands, components and levels of the framework matrix.
  5. Assist in the development and provision of CPD activities based on needs identified by Fellows and participating Colleges, with particular emphasis on Strands 2 and 3.
  6. Notify you by email, of any new learning activities that are developed or become available. These will also be put on the LEAP Framework web site and placed on the matrix under the appropriate strands and components.
  7. Monitor, collect and collate data of participating Fellows throughout the trial period. Where relevant and of general interest, put summaries of this information on the web site.
  8. Provide three monthly progress reports to Colleges.
  9. Be available to answer any questions and/or provide advice throughout the trial.
  10. Evaluate the project with the help of an external provider, using qualitative and quantitative methods: in particular whether the framework is relevant, flexible and understandable to Colleges and medical specialists: and the ability of the programs based on the framework to effect changes in practice and/or health outcomes.
  11. Provide all participants and Colleges with a copy of the final report of the project, upon its completion.

The framework has the capacity to adapt to a change in statutory requirements that may occur in the future.
As you can appreciate, Medical Colleges have very different CPD programs, activities, expectations and administrative procedures. Setting minimum guidelines that are considered achievable and realistic to all participants, regardless of their speciality, is a challenge. Your honest and thoughtful reflection and appraisal at the end of the pilot will be essential to the validation, or otherwise, of the Framework.
