Aims

Inadequate or inappropriate use of intrapartum fetal surveillance is too often a feature of adverse obstetric outcomes in Australia and New Zealand .

Our goal is to improve professional levels of understanding and confidence in the area of fetal surveillance, thereby reducing the risks of adverse perinatal outcomes.

We aim to do this by using standardised and targeted education of the highest clinical quality:

  • Our content is evidence based and focuses on the underlying pathophysiology of the fetus.
  • We address the appropriate use and interpretation of fetal surveillance including intermittent auscultation and continuous electronic fetal monitoring.
  • We incorporate the RANZCOG Intrapartum Fetal Surveillance Clinical Guidelines.

By the end of the FSEP session, it is hoped that participants will:

1. 1. Appreciate the importance of an understanding of fetal physiology, in interpreting CTGs.

2. Have an improved understanding of the physiological genesis of the fetal heart rate and its pattens, as pertaining to the CTG.

3. Have improved their ability to interpret the CTG trace (normal and abnormal), using a physiological based approach.

4. Have improved their capacity to respond appropriately to potential fetal compromise, as identified by an abnormal CTG.

5. Have improved their confidence in interpreting and managing intrapartum CTGs.

6. Have improved their awareness of the resources available to assist in CTG interpretation and management.

7. Consider developing and implementing an on going, multidisciplinary review of intrapartum CTGs in their health care facility.

We encourage multidisciplinary participation in all our education sessions to improve the skill level of the professional cohort while simultaneously encouraging staff communication.

We are non-profit and are committed to delivering our face-to-face sessions throughout metropolitan and regional areas of Australia and New Zealand , to ensure all staff can access our education.
