Training Supervisors
What is a Training Supervisor?
A Training Supervisor for the Integrated Training Program (ITP)/Elective
training program and the Subspecialty training programs must be
a Fellow of the RANZCOG employed at the site where the trainee is
training. The Fellow may be a full-time or part-time staff specialist
or, where appropriate, a Visiting Medical Officer. He/she is responsible
for the overall supervision and mentoring of the trainee. All trainees
must have a designated Training Supervisor. ITP/Elective/ Subspecialty
Training Supervisors are responsible for conducting the three-monthly
formative and six-monthly summative assessments of their trainees
using the appropriate RANZCOG forms.
Training Supervisors in the DRANZCOG (basic Diploma) training program
must be either Fellows of the RANZCOG or holders of the DRANZCOG
Advanced certificate.
Trainees in the DRANZCOG Advanced training program each require
two supervisors – a specialist supervisor, who must be a RANZCOG
Fellow, and a GP supervisor.
For details on the roles and responsibilities of Training Supervisors
in the various programs, refer to the relevant section below.
The Appointment Process for Training Supervisors
ITP/Elective Training Supervisors must be formally approved by
the relevant Regional/New Zealand Training Accreditation (TA) Committee.
Prospective supervisors seeking this approval should submit a letter

is supportive of the application for approval. The application for
approval will be considered at the next meeting of the relevant
local TA Committee.
Fellows seeking approval to become Subspecialty Training Supervisors
must be approved by the relevant Subspecialty Committee. The letter
or email of application, together with an up-to-date CV, should
be submitted to the Subspecialty & Curriculum Development Services
Manager at College House.
Prospective DRANZCOG/DRANZCOG Advanced Training Supervisors must
be approved by the Training, Recertification and Accreditation Subcommittee
of the Conjoint Committee of the Diploma of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
Application forms may be obtained by contacting the Diploma Administration
Officer in the Training Services Department at College House.

RANZCOG Training Supervisor Workshops
All ITP/Elective/Subspecialty Training Supervisors are required
to attend a RANZCOG Training Supervisor workshop within 3 years
of their appointment. These one-day workshops focus on the role
and responsibilities of Training Supervisors, and the practicalities
of training (e.g. teaching and learning behaviours, giving constructive
feedback, and helping underperforming trainees). The workshops are
interactive and include discussions, videos and role plays of difficult
trainee-supervisor scenarios.
