The Development of PR&CRM (formerly Practice Improvement)

Background

During the November 2002 Council there was a three-hour forum on the College’s Practice Improvement program. Furthermore, at the February 2003 Council, there was a joint extraordinary meeting of the CPD and PI Committees, which was followed by further discussion at the formal Council Meeting held 22 February 2003.

The rationale for the change from Practice Improvement (PI) to Practice Review and Clinical Risk Management (PR&CRM) is a genuine attempt to broaden the range of activities acceptable for the allocation of points in this mandatory area of CPD.

A major consideration from the College was the steadily increasing need to provide confirmation to a range of statutory bodies that Fellows are actively participating in a CPD program. For example, the Federal Government of Australia has offered a substantial rebate to obstetricians on their medical indemnity premiums, conditional on documented participation in CPD and risk management programs. The negotiating committee for the Federal Government on this project have carefully examined our program and accepted that it fulfils their requirements. This model is sure to extend to other government initiatives such as the new funding proposed for ultrasound services. As a result of these considerations, the Council felt it unwise to reduce the rigour of our CPD program in the current medico-legal climate.
