RANZCOG/ACHS Obstetric and Gynaecology Clinical Indicators

Obstetric Clinical Indicators

In 2007, the President established a working party to review the obstetric clinical indicators as the current set had been in use since January 2004 and had some perceived deficiencies. The working party, made up of specialists and sub-specialists, considered the existing obstetric indicators, the latest clinical evidence and other maternity indicators available in Australia including those produced by the recently completed Core Maternity Indicator Project.

The aim of the working party was to come up with a set of obstetric indicators for use in healthcare services that are:

  • robust;
  • measurable;
  • reflective of good practice; and
  • applicable across a variety of practice in both Australia and New Zealand.

The obstetric clinical indicators were approved by Council in December 2007 and included in the 2008 ACHS Clinical Indicator Manual. In summary the obstetric indicators are as follows;

Indicator 1: Outcome of selected primipara

Indicator 2: Vaginal delivery following caesarean section (vbac)

Indicator 3: Major perineal tears & surgical repair of the perineum

Indicator 4 : General anaesthesia for caesarean section

Indicator 5: Antibiotic prophylaxis & caesarean section

Indicator 6: Pharmacological thromboprophylaxis & caesarean section

Indicator 7: Postpartum haemorrhage / blood transfusion

Indicator 8: Intrauterine growth restriction (iugr)

Indicator 9: Apgar score

Indicator 10: All admissions of a term baby to special care nursery or neonatal intensive care nursery

Indicator 11: Peer review of serious adverse events

Note that the Obstetric Clinical Indicators sets were revised in May 2008 to provide greater clarity to several of the definitions.

Gynaecology Clinical Indicators

In 2006 RANZCOG in collaboration with AGES established a working party to review the gynaecology clinical indicators. The working party identified further topics that reflected the breadth of gynaecology practice in the hospital setting. The draft indicator set were approved by Council in November 2006 and included in the 2007 ACHS Clinical Indicator Manual.

Gynaecology Clinical Indicator topics include

Indicator 1: Blood Transfusion

Indicator 2: Injury to a Major Viscus

Indicator 3: Laparoscopic Surgery

Indicator 4: Laparoscopic Management of an Ectopic Pregnancy

Indicator 5: Urogynaecology

Indicator 6: Antibiotic Prophylaxis

Indicator 7: Thromboprophylaxis

Note that the Gynaecology Clinical Indicators sets have been revised to provide greater clarity to several of the definitions.

You are encouraged to collect those indicators that reflect your practice profile; review the results; focus on any improvements that can be made; continue to monitor and evaluate the outcomes.

You are encouraged to select those indicators that reflect your practice profile to monitor the care that you provide by;

  • collecting the data for the selected indicators
  • reviewing the results both for yourself and within the institution where you practise
  • focusing on any improvements that can be made in your own practice and/or in hospital policies and protocols
  • implementing change where required
  • continuing to monitor appropriate indicators to ensure better patient outcomes

RANZCOG Fellows can accrue CPD points in the PR&CRM category on completing this activity. For further information on the gynaecology and obstetric indicators please contact Valerie Jenkins, Manager Fellowship Services vjenkins@ranzcog.edu.au

The Colposcopy CD-Rom

The PR&CRM team are pleased to announce the availability of a new CPD activity: The Colposcopy CD-Rom.

This CD-Rom has been developed by RANZCOG and RANZCOG Fellows Dr Louise Farrell and Professor Ian Hammond, in conjunction with the Australian Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP)

The CD-Rom includes pre and post testing, links to current guidelines and an opportunity to view a range of colposcopic images and histology slides. Emphasis is on real clinical case scenarios, patient history and appropriate management in line with current best practice guidelines.

Completion of the Colposcopy CD-Rom accrues 5 CPD points in the PR&CRM category. The CD-Rom also includes resources to accrue additional PR&CRM points associated with this activity.

Audits on the RANZCOG Website

There are many Fellows who are interested in setting up an audit within their practice, but are unsure of how to go about it or do not have the resources to develop a relevant and user-friendly system.

If you have developed an audit, you may like to consider spreading the word about it so your colleagues may similarly learn from your experience.

A page within the Members Only section of the RANZCOG website is being established to provide Fellows with an opportunity to disseminate audits they have developed.

If you have developed an audit and would like to share your knowledge so your colleages may also improve their practice, please complete following form:

Audit Template

A PR&CRM points template has been developed in response to the increase number of Fellows claiming points for developing or completing audits. This template may assist you in documenting your points for audit activities.
