The Shan S Ratnam Young Gynaecologist Awards to attend AOFOG Congresses Background and Purpose

The aim of the AOFOG Shan S Ratnam Young Gynaecologist Award program is to enable promising young obstetricians and gynaecologists from member countries of the Asia and Oceania region to attend the Asia and Oceanic Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (AOCOG), hosted in various AOFOG member countries, and usually held biennially.

In 2002, it was agreed by AOFOG that the existing Shan S Ratnam Young Gynaecologist Award program be extended to further encourage participation of young gynaecologists from all 23 member countries. AOFOG member countries were encouraged to develop the YGA initiative in their own societies. As a result, YGA recipients from developing countries are funded by the AOFOG YGA Fund and YGA recipients from developed countries are funded by their national member societies.

The participation of young gynaecologists in the congress affords them an opportunity to update knowledge and skills in obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive biology, promotes social interaction between these young delegates of different countries in the region and their peers, and by encouraging attendance at the General Assembly session, provides an insight into the functioning of the Federation for the YGA recipients. YGA recipients present a scientific paper at a special session in the congress program. It would be hoped that networking between award recipients would continue to develop past the congress and that the awardees will continue contact with colleagues on an ongoing basis.

The first RANZCOG-supported YGAs were assisted to attend the Asia & Oceanic Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Seoul Korea in October 2005.
